New York State Teacher Center team with NYSUT to offer:
Writing Institutes For NBC Candidates
In response to requests from teachers across NYS who are current National Board candidates, Take One, or Advanced Candidates this retreat was created to give time to their own writing in a collegial environment. Working independently, with partners, or in writing groups on portfolio entries, candidates have the opportunity to write, read, review and reflect in congenial and supportive surroundings. The community of writers and reviewers supports the development of portfolio entries and the peer review of video tapes of classroom teaching. Recognizing that candidates need time for intellectual stimulation, for reading and writing and to exchange feedback with colleagues from diverse schools, the writing retreat helps teachers exchange ideas and respond to one another’s works. This group gathering is unlike other retreats because candidates have the chance to discuss and listen to issues particular to their unique work, as their work is unfolding. Join your colleagues for thoughtful and reflective discussion about National Board Certification in a collegial setting. This program is open only to NBC Candidates and Advanced/Renewal Candidates.
New Dates will be listed in the Fall of 2010

Candidate Support Providers Training
Thousands of facilitators, called Candidate Support Providers (CSPs), are guiding candidates across the country through the rigorous process of National Board Certification. Join us for a unique CSP Training experience, developed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), for people who want to ensure they have the very latest instruction in CSP methodology and ethics, directly from the source.
NBPTS is very excited to provide you with the opportunity to participate in the newly developed Candidate Support Provider (CSP) Training. While the critical topics of the NEW CSP Training remain the same as the original, the new training has additional vital information, brand new activities, and takes a more thorough look at entry review. Whether you are an experienced CSP or brand new, take this opportunity to work with a highly skilled NBPTS Faculty member, collaborate with other CSPs from across the state, and get a fresh new look at providing candidate support.
Objectives
After completing this training, participants should be able to:
- Explain the fundamentals of candidate support including its history, the roles and responsibilities of CSPs, and the Architecture of Accomplished Teaching.
- Interpret and apply NBPTS guidelines that ensure ethical candidate support.
- Explain the processes used for scoring portfolio entries and assessment center exercises.
- Work effectively with candidates by applying adult learning principles, using effective communication skills, and being aware of potential biases.
- Review portfolio entries and be able to provide meaningful and ethical feedback to candidate
NBPTS Certificate upon completion.
