National Board Certification Day was December 16, 2009! This was the day the National Board for Professional Teaching State publicly released the names of the new National Board Certified Teachers in New York State and across the USA. Congratulations to the 117 new NBCTs who have achieved this distinction in our teaching profession! There are now 999 NBCTs in NYS.

- recruiting other candidates, being a mentor, providing professional development, or teaching on the graduate level. (NBCAwareness PPT)
- renewing your certificate.
- staying active on the NBPTS NBCT Link.
- growing the network by creating an active NBCT group in your region.
- collaborating with institutions of higher education to incorporate the work of NBPTS and discussing ways to promote teacher leadership.
- continuing course work in teacher leadership. (see Higher Ed webpage)
- apply for New York State Teacher of the Year a program to recognize and celebrate outstanding teachers throughout New York State. It is run in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year program
Supporting Candidates
Many NBCTs continue to be involved with NBC by supporting candidates. NBPTS calls these facilitators, Candidate Support Providers (CSPs). To assist NBCTs in becoming more confident in the various needs of candidacy, NBPTS has created a NEW two-day training which is available at least once a year through the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center. To access this training and obtain registration information. For more information contact Annette Romano. Support Groups can be created by working with local Teacher Centers or contacting NYSUTs Education and Learning Trust. (See Supporting Candidate's Page). NBPTS CSP Training have been held (Oct 20008) UFTTC, (March 2009) and The Rensselaerville Institiute(July 5-8, 2010). The next training will be held at Union Graduate College School of Education on October 16-17th, 2009.
Renewal Candidates
National Board Certified Teachers, if you have never before received the Albert Shanker Grant, and are, full-time, certified and tenured teacher in a New York public school, you may be eligible to receive the Shanker Grant. You will need to send your $300 deposit to NBPTS with your renewal application. Then complete the Shanker Grant application form and Check the box on the bottom of the form that indicates you are a renewal candidate. Once your candidacy is verified, the NYState Education Department will provide third-party payment to directly credit your account with NBPTS in an amount up to $1,150.
